Kindred

So in this reading we will be discussing whether or not the reading reflects the values of the majoritarian culture. So there is a story of a young black lady who lives in New York and she has these dizzy spells which take her back in time. There is where everything starts for the main character.

When she goes back in time for the first time when she moves into her new apartment in Southern California, she sees a white boy drowning and she goes over to help him. Then the father advances on her to point a gun at  her. This happens over and over when the black woman helps the white boy the father steps in and tries to hurt her.

So we are asked the question, does this reflect any entitlement on the white people or black people? I personally think that it does a little bit but not a great extent. The reason I say this is because, every time the black lady wanted to help the young white boy, the father thought she was going to hurt him. Or, maybe he thought that black people should not be around white people and that it is a disgrace. Both of these assumptions by the father is cruel and not the right outlook when you have never met someone before. Also, the fact that the father would treat her family and not have any emotions about it is just awful. There are so many more examples that we could talk about, but it is same emotions from above. So in all, there is a some entitlement but the other thing is that, no matter who you are or what class or entitlement, you should never treat or look down on people.
